When was the last time you tasted your food? When I eat, I close my eyes and take a bite of my food. I focus on the flavor and the texture. Not only do I think of how it tastes, but I think of what it reminds me of. I think of other similar foods, and allow my brain to make connections. I allow the food to take me on a journey and think of the last time food made me feel this way. Perhaps it was yesterday. Perhaps, I was a child. This is an exercise for your taste buds and for your mind, and I consider it the most important meditation of the day. It will make you feel happy, wise, worthy, and strong.
Beyond exercising your mind and your taste buds, it will get you to turn off the distractions. Turn off the television and the cell phone. Focus on what you are doing. This is important, because many people overeat due to eating too fast. If you are taking your time and focusing on each bite, you will be eating at a slower rate. This is also better for digestion. You will also begin to think about what you are putting into your body, and begin making conscious decisions about your health.
So, now we have physical and mental health. If you really wish to add to a spiritual dimension, you can go a number of routes. I suggest starting with gratitude. Before you eat, take a moment and appreciate your food and the very fact that you have it. Whether it was given to you or you bought it for yourself, it’s kind of miraculous you have food before you. If you’re into energy work, you can also focus on taking in the energy of the food itself, increasing the strength of your aura or “feeding” your chakras. This isn’t far removed from the Ancient Egyptians feeding the Ba and the Ka in ancient times. In Ancient Egypt, priests and priestesses presented special offerings of food and drink to the statues of deities. It was believed that the spirit and the soul of the deity would come down from the sky and inhabit the statue. The energy of the food and drink would then be taken by the soul and spirit of the deity, so that the soul would remain strong. Similar rites were held for the Blessed Dead, and food was stored away in burial chambers for the same reason. Now, you have added gratitude and intent.
